While many women may wish that they had larger breasts to enhance their image, and many of these same women ultimately do get breast implants, other women opt for the opposite - breast reduction surgery. Why the reduction? Simply because of preference and self-image or because of a real practical need related to the extra weight and sometimes associated back strain.
Women's breast sizes can be closely tied to their psychological well being. If a young girl's breasts develop and are too large, she may be teased by classmates. Her breasts may not be in proportion to the rest of her body and she may also feel very self conscious. Also, having breast reduction for women with larger breasts can do the same thing that getting breast implants can do for women with smaller breasts - that's reshape them. This can also lead to an improved self image. Psychological effects are one of the main reasons for breast reduction.
Another reason for breast reduction is the physical effects if a woman's breasts aren't in proportion to her body. If the breasts develop too large, then she could end up with back and neck problems. And bras may be weighted down so much that it causes shoulder issues.
Women who are very athletic and into sports may also choose to have breast reduction surgery if their breasts are too large. Larger breasts may be awkward or interfere with sports performance.
Women can have normal breast reduction surgery or liposuction to reduce the size of the breasts. In standard surgery, incisions are made and excess fat and tissue are removed. With liposuction, excess fat is sucked out. Liposuction won't work for every woman. This is typically a procedure for women who have large amounts of fat in their breasts.
There aren't too many major risks involved with breast reduction surgery. However, the surgery does leave scars. But the severity of the scars depends on each patient. There can also be an issue where the nipples may not be evenly placed after surgery or each breast may not be exactly the same size. Some women may also experience a loss in sensation in her breast or nipples after having breast reduction.
If you are thinking of having breast reduction surgery, be sure to talk to your doctor to find out the best options for you.
