Breast implants have been the source of controversial social and medical debates for a long time now, and women still pay to get breast implants and doctors continue to perform the procedure to enlarge these women’s breasts. There are several reasons that women may choose to get breast implants, which may benefit them but can also produce possible risks as well.

One the biggest reasons women get breast implants is to improve their self esteem. They believe that having larger breasts will not only enhance their bust size but also their self image. Women may also choose to get breast implants after having a mastectomy (removal of the breast). Mastectomies are done as treatment for breast cancer. After this treatment, replacing the lost breast with an implant can help women keep their sense of femininity. In some cases, if a woman’s breast is considerably smaller than the other, she may choose to get a breast implant so that her breasts appear to be the same size.

When getting breast implants, there are many choices to make. You can get saline implants or silicone implants. Saline implants require less intrusion because they are filled at the time of surgery – so a smaller cut is needed to implant them. A bigger cut is necessary for silicone implants because they are prefilled. But some think that silicone implants feel more natural. A woman will also need to decide if she wants textured or smooth implants and round or shaped implants.

The main benefit to breast implants is improved self esteem and an improved self image. Women who have a smaller breast size may feel better about themselves once they’ve received implants. An improved self image can especially be true for women who have had mastectomies. Women can also benefit from implants if they have a problem with sagging breasts.

There are some risks involved with breast implants however. The main risk is that implants are not permanent and follow-up work could be necessary. If a woman has a saline implant, then the body will naturally absorb the saline solution. The woman will notice a change in her breast size and shape. If a woman has a silicone implant which ruptures or leaks, the implant should be removed as soon as possible. Surgery will necessary to remove it and replace it.

Another risk of breast implants is capsular contracture. This is caused when scar tissue forms around the implant and constricts it. In the most severe cases, surgery is required to fix this.
