Male Pattern Baldness is a form hair loss on the head that is very common (around 25% of men begin balding by age 30 and 66.6% by age 60). Baldness starts with a receding hairline and thinning hair at the crown of the head. Hormones and genetics are said to the main cause of the loss of hair for men and currently there is no natural prevention. Baldness happens when hair follicles get smaller and the hair that’s left ends up being shorter in length and creates a finer texture. Ultimately, the follicles become very small and there is no hair left in that area. Once the area becomes a balding pattern, there will not be hair growth in the follicle. The receding of hair starts at the hairline and begins to form the shape of the letter "M". The thinning hair at the crown turns into the shape of a horseshoe. This leaves hair only around the sides of the head.

Males can also experience hair loss by shedding, breaking off, or patches. If it’s connected with pain, scaling or redness, this could be the result of some medical issue. A man may need a hair analysis if their baldness is caused by the anything than a normal receding hairline.

Unless a man is self-conscious about being bald, treatment is not required. They can also use hairpieces or try to implement a hairstyle that can camouflage the baldness. These are safe options and are cost-effective. However, if treatment is required, there are two drugs that are used for male baldness:

  • Propecia – this pill stops the male hormone dihydrotestosterone from producing and the loss of hair will slow down. This medicine can be effective and loss of hair will continue once the man stops using it.
  • Rogaine – is a special liquid put on the scalp which keeps hair from thinning and with some men may even cause the hair follicles to produce fresh hair. When a man stops using it, the hair loss returns to the state it was before.

Another alternative is hair transplantation, which is costly mostly due to the fact that it takes several visits to complete the procedure. On the other hand, the end results are pretty favorable and often permanent. It is dangerous to try and sew hair pieces to a man’s scalp. They can end up with scars, infections or scalp abscess. Due to the high infection rates, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) banned this procedure. If a man experiences hair loss due to anything other than the normal balding process, they need to seek medical attention, since there may be an underlying illness behind why they are losing their hair.

Being bald is not a bad thing; in fact, men should embrace their baldness and keep their self-esteem intact.
