Cancer is a collection of diseases that involve abnormal cells that divide and spread to other tissues and parts of the body. There are many different types of cancers, and the disease can seemingly originate from any region of the body. In fact, most of the types of cancers get their name from the part of the body that the disease started in. Most of these cancers form some type of tumor in the body, and the disease spreads by using going through the blood or the lymph systems. There are types of cancers that do not form a tumor however, such as leukemia. Cancer can affect people of all ages, and can also affect animals as well.
The mere mention of cancer is enough to strike fear into a large part of the population, because the disease affects such a large number of people that almost everyone has been exposed to it either directly or indirectly. It’s difficult to find a family that hasn’t had to face some form of the disease at one time or another. Perhaps the scariest part of all though, is that it can seemingly strike without rhyme or reason. While this is certainly true, there are indeed several factors that can increase the chances of a person contracting some form of the disease. Heredity is a factor to consider if there is a history of cancer in the family. Smoking tobacco will definitely increase a person’s odds of getting lung cancer, while overexposure to the sun can cause forms of skin cancer. Basically, anything that can trigger abnormal behavior in cells can play a factor in increasing one’s chances.
The earlier the cancer is detected, the better are your chances of successfully treating the cancer and possibly completely removing it from your system all together. There are several different treatment options, including surgery, radiation treatment, alternative treatments, or a combination of all these and others. Surgery can remove the tumor, but there is a still a chance that the disease could return. Radiation treatment is used to kill the cancer cells, which will also kill some of the healthy cells, in order to reduce the size of the tumor itself. Chemotherapy is a very common treatment, involving the use of a variety of cancer drugs that are flushed into the system in hopes of being able to destroy the cancer cells (also killing healthy tissue as a side affect). There are many other treatments available, with a diverse set of pros and cons coming with each one. The most important and best treatment of all however, is to practice any forms of prevention that are possible and quickly seek the help of professionals should there be a change to your body that you are unsure of.
