As you get older, your skin will change. Your skin will not have as much fat and it starts to look thinner. The smoothness that used to be there will disappear. You will be able to see a skeletal image of your bones and your veins will be more visible. You may have a problem with cuts and scratches taking longer to heal. If you stay out in the sun too long, your skin may wrinkle faster or you could get skin cancer.

You can implement proper skin care in order to keep it intact. If you have dry skin, your skin will usually feel scaly and rough. Dry skin patches are found on your elbows, the lower part of the arms and legs. Causes of dry skin include:

  • Being in the sun too long
  • Smoking
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Stress
  • Dry air
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease

You can alleviate this dry skin conditions by not using a lot of soaps, perfumes and refrain from taking hot baths. Proper skin care would also include regularly applying topical creams, lotions or ointments. In order for it to be effective on your skin, you need to use a topical substance every day.

In addition to using topical creams and lotions, other skin care procedures that you can use include:

  • Sunscreen – Use sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) number of 15 or more. Even better, use sunscreen that includes “broad spectrum”. If you use sunscreen that is water resistant, you will end up applying it every two hours.
  • Stay out of the sun – Between the hours of 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon is the time when you need to stay out of the sun. The sun rays are the strongest during this time.
  • Tanning – Proper skin care includes not tanning with tanning beds or sunlamps. Don’t think about taking tanning pills. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not approved them for use and using them would be at your own risk.
  • Protective clothing – If you are in the sun, wear a hat with a wide brim. Doing so can help to protect your neck, ears, eyes and head. If you wear sunglasses, they should work to block at least 99 to 100 percent of rays from the sun.

Using these skin care procedures will help to improve the quality of your skin. However, don’t discount seeing a dermatologist to make sure that you are implementing the skin care procedures correctly.
